Ambition for Ageing seminar: Community research: Belonging in neighbourhoods

We are happy to announce the second in our series of Autumn 2020 online seminars:

Community research: Belonging in neighbourhoods

Wednesday 9th December, 11:00am – 12:10pm

What does it mean to belong to your neighbourhood for marginalised communities?

This seminar will share the findings of two Ambition for Ageing research projects, Ageing Equally and GM GOLD, that consider how members of marginalised communities perceive neighbourhood belonging.

The Ageing Equally programme aimed to generate a deeper understanding of what supports wellbeing and what makes places age-friendly for a cross-section of communities of identity or experience within the population of Greater Manchester, in order to prevent social isolation.

GM GOLD (Greater Manchester Growing Older with Learning Disabilities) was a research project carried out by a team of 16 older people with learning disabilities that aimed to find out what makes somewhere an age-friendly place to live for older adults with learning disabilities.

Speakers:

  • Henshaws will present findings from their Ageing Equally project which looked at the resources and assets older visually impaired people find useful and enjoy, or find absent or inadequate, within the neighbourhoods where they live.

  • Rethink, Rebuild Society will speak about the challenges faced by older Syrian Refugees in Salford and Oldham in regards to neighbourhood belonging.

  • GM GOLD will share findings from their research project on what makes a neighbourhood an age-friendly place to live for older adults with learning disabilities.
